Yanzi 2006 Live in Singapore Concert Review
January 15, 2006
14 January 2006
8.00pm
Singapore Indoor Stadium
This is Yanzi’s first concert in Singapore since the Start concert in 2002. Word has it that Chinese singers usually have a career lifespan of no more than 5 years and there were reports claiming that Yanzi’s popularity is on the wane. However, judging by yesterday’s turnout and level of enthusiasm for the concert, it seems to state otherwise. Prior to the concert, there were reports questioning the high cost for the concert tickets, but the thousands who turned up yesterday would be able tell you why it was well worth the every dollar spent. It was a great ensemble of colourful and elaborate visuals intensified by Yanzi’s excellent vocal prowess.
The concert kickstart to a high when Yanzi belted out fast numbers like 风筝 and 奔. Despite the initial minor hiccups due to the faulty wireless mic and sound system, Yanzi entertained the crowd with well-coordinated dance moves, including Tango and Tap dance. It’s evident that Yanzi’s dancing has improved over the years. In between the fast numbers were Yanzi’s signature slow sentimental songs which she sang to perfection and had the crowd swaying gently to the beat of the music.
F.I.R was the special guest for the concert. Yanzi and F.I.R sang 第一天 which they had jointly produced together with Mayday. F.I.R took to the stage as they also sang two other hit songs. Other than F.I.R, Yanzi’s good pal Tanya also turned up to give her support as they engaged in a short unplugged session where Tanya played the guitarist and sang 原点 and 陌生人 together. This is the first time that they’re singing these songs together in the performance and this unplugged rendition of 陌生人 is perfect.
Yanzi continued to wow the audience with a string of songs as she made around 10 change in costume to suit the theme of her songs. During the interval between the songs, Yanzi talked about her feelings and how things have changed during the past 5 years. In one of the speech towards the end, she talked about the book she read the night before and quoted what she read “Men should not accept destiny, you should choose it”, she continued, “下来的五分钟, 我们不知道会发生什么事, 但是我们要往前…” Indeed, the past 5 years must have been amazing for her. Had she not chosen this path, we would not have known her and would not be able to savour her wonderful songs. And yesterday’s concert, in front of her family and friends, in front of her home fans, was the best result slip of her hardwork and achievements over the past 5 years she could present to them. The concert ended on a high note as she sang the last song, 天黑黑, where the entire stadium sang to the chorus. How we wished the night will never end…
